Asia Center(ed)

The recently launched Milken Institute Asia Center is getting ready for its close-up. This month, Laura Deal Lacey started as managing director of the Singapore-based center. And we were lucky to get her: Laura's background as executive director of the American Chamber of Commerce in Singapore, as well as her years as head of the Women Leaders Program at the World Economic Forum, makes her the perfect fit.

Chan Heng Wing will guide the Center as its chair. Chan had a distinguished career with Singapore's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, including serving as ambassador to Thailand and consul-general in Shanghai. Later, he was managing director for international relations at Temasek, one of Singapore's sovereign wealth funds. Singapore is increasingly important as the financial and business crossroads of Southeast Asia, and an ideal place for the Milken Institute to contribute to the conversation on the region's ongoing development.

Jobs Act – Scene ii

After the JOBS Act was passed by Congress last year, the Institute's Center for Financial Markets convened a roundtable discussion on crowdfunding and published a report on how the nascent market should be structured and regulated. In July, the SEC proposed rules required by the act, including lifting the long-standing ban on general solicitation for private investment offerings. And this month our DC colleagues again convened some of the nation's leading authorities in the field to explore what the removal of the ban is likely to mean for entrepreneurs and policymakers. Look for the final report, including key takeaways, coming soon to the Institute's Web site.
